Swayamvar Sabha of Draupadi

All Kshatriyas fail, Karna Denied, Arjuna wins, Kuru-Karna defeated

Birth of Draupadi was soon followed by her swayamvar, as has been indicated by Krishna. Dhritadyumna made the essential arrangement for the amphitheatre in Panchal and puts a heavy challenge for the Kshatriyas. The challenge that was placed in the Swayamvar sabha to win Draupadi was two-fold. The first part of that was to raise the heavy bow, that was really a launcher, which everyone cannot raise. The second one was to aim the eye of fish, placed above, by looking at the water body below. Dhristadyumna was confident that this two Swayamvar feats can only be cracked by the best archer of the world, and none else. However, Drupada was worried, since Arjuna and other Pandavas died at Varnavrata.

Finally the auspicious day of Swayamvar arrived and Kshatriyas of different regions reached Panchal. Everyone was desirous to have a look at the Yagnaseni, the wonderful maid born out of Yagna fire. And everyone was confident to win the Swayamvar and take back the auspicious lady with them. In the amphitheatre of Panchal, Drupada sits on the King’s throne and his priests at his side. One the other side of his, sat the Dwarkadheesh, Vasudev Shri Krishna and his brother Balram. Krishna was soon introduced to all by Drupada as the mentor of the entire show, at which Sisupala, though unwilling to accept, accepts that disregarded.

Draupadi, the beauty queen, enters then to the amphitheatre. There was no need to introduce her to anyone. Her beautiful darkish copper body complexion, blue lotus like hair locks and a heavy fragrance of blue lotus from her auspicious body, foretold everyone, who she is. As she takes her seat with garland in hand for the groom, Krishna introduces Dhritadyumna and allocates him the task to monitor the swayamvar competition.

One after another, different Kshatriyas came to the dice at middle and tried to win the feats. However, none was even able to lift up the bow. The bow was not a very heavy one, but the style of keeping it was such that, only the best of archers can lift it up. After Bhagadatta, the son of Narakasura, Princes of Chedi, Sisupal and Rukmi, Somadatta and even Salva failed to even touch the feat, Duryodhana came there hastily, showing his arrogance and power. However, he also could not do manage the feat and could not lift up the bow. After Duryodhana failed, with his provocation, Bhishma and Drona, wished to do the feat for Duryodhana.

Krishna intervenes the show this time. He points out that when your prince has failed, how can you two, being so much knowledgeable in Kshatriya rules, can win Panchali for that prince? Do your prince has the courage to win the sawaymvar on his own? He showed, he have not that courage! Then how can you, O Pitamaha! Both Bhishma and Drona, understanding the point of Keshav, sat down tight on their seat. The entire show showed that there is not a single Kshatriya on earth who can fulfil the feat and win Yagnaseni. This made Drupada even more anxious.

Duryodhana then invoked Karna for the swayamvar feat and Karna, desirous to attain Draupadi, being attacked with god of Lust, comes to the dice. Karna became the first one to manage the first of the feat. He lifted up the bow, showing his archery skills. Drupada was shocked at that and found some light in darkness. At last, someone has the courage and capability to win his daughter. But, Draupadi gives the second shock to the king on the event of Swayamvar.

She, with a voice, that resembled the fierce fire of forest at the end days, said to the entire sabha like this. “Has the entire Kshatriya caste lost their seeds that a Sudra has to come and win me?” This highly insulting statement made the princes, the Bhagadattas, the Chedis and even the Kurus put down their head in shy. She continued, “I believe that Bharata gives this empowerment to the maids that they can choose their own husband. Moreover, Bharata rules also states that a man of lower caste can then only marry a maid of higher caste, when she permits him to do so. O Karna, what do you think? Someone has bestowed a kingdom on you, and that turned you to a Kshatriya? How fool you are and how fool your friend is making this all respected kings and princes? Well, I am not interested in any of your or your friend’s thoughts. What I want to say is that I will never allow myself to marry a man of lower caste. You can leave the dice, and never ever think yourself to be compatible with any Kshatriya rights and rituals henceforth.”

Karna, always arrogant of his power, and always willing to wear peacock feathers and join the race of peacocks, felt shy and left the dice of Swayamvar. But this all incidences worried king Drupada even more. There remained not a single Kshatriya to win her daughter.

With Krishna’s counsel, then Drupada invited Brahmanas to participate in the competition and win his daughter from Swayamvar. There were plenty of Brahmanas who were assembled at the amphitheatre to see the Kshatriya feats, but none of them came forward. A gossip surrounded throughout the hall about the urge of king. How can brahmanas, who are weaker with muscle power can do the feat, which the powerful Kshatriyas couldn’t do?

Finally, Arjuna was sent to Swayamvar by Yudhisthira, saying him to release the pressure on the father, the king, who wants to bestow his daughter in good hands. Pandavas, were there in the Brahmana disguise and from the crowd of Brahmanas, Arjuna came forward. Everyone was astonished to see him. Such a tall, handsome Brahmana? Wide Shoulders like Sala tree, long arms like Vasuki snake and well built physics – who is he among brahmanas? Is he a pure Brahmana, or from a mother who is from a renowned Kshatriya family?

Arjuna, after coming to the dice, bowed his head to all the elders sitting there. His bowing towards Bhishma and Drona, made them feel that he is Arjuna. His bowing towards Krishna and Balram, could not make a sense to Balram, but Krishna at once identified his soul mate of eternity, the rishi Nara. Then Arjuna, eying Draupadi and seeking permission from her, bowed down to the great Launcher bow. His attitude was such that, Draupadi felt special attachment to him at the first sight. Arjuna, the best of archers, fixed his mind on the bow and lifts it up with a single strike, as if he was lifting a kusha grass.

The entire hall was astonished at this amazing feat of Brahmana in the swayamvar sabha. Arjuna, was surrounding himself only at that time. Not a single sound was able to penetrate his mind, as he fixed the lace of the bow and aimed the fish eye. He didn’t took much time to aim the eye of fish too and he never had missed a shot in his life. The feat was done. Drona and Bhishma, by this time was sure that he is none but Arjuna alone. There is none in the earth other than him, to make this Swayamvar feat possible and he have done that. Karna, felt Arjuna, but could not forget that he died at Varnavrata. Draupadi, felt overwhelmed at this young man and garlanded him as her husband.

Duryodhana, the ever-evil minded one, this time invoked all the princes and kings. He said, “This King Drupada called us here at Swayamvar to insult us. All you have seen here are pre-manipulated. This king just wished to insult us. So attack him as he must not remain alive now.” Bhishma and Drona tried to resist him. To them, where Vasudev Shri Krishna and Balram are there, how can one act like this? This is an act of pure foolishness. However, when the attack was made in Swayamvar Sabha, Krishna and Balram need not have to interpret even.

Yudhisthira said onto Bhima, ”Protect thy brother and the King in this Swayamvar sabha.  The King is our relative now. Myself with the sons of Madri, are going ahead, so that no one can sense that we are the sons of King Pandu.” Saying thus, the three brothers left the amphitheatre. Bhima joins Arjuna at the dice of Swayamvar sabha and Bhimarjuna made havoc on the day. Arjuna single handed managed all the archers, including Karna. He pierced every single archer present there with feathery arrows, that pierced their body making deep wounds. Karna was also not left out. But, the bows that pierced Karna’s heart, making the armour red in blood, made Karna firmly believe that the man is none but Arjuna himself.

Karna felt, who except Arjuna, can have such fluency of hands and such power to give me pain with his arrows? But, his thought remained in the middle, as Arjuna again pierced him and faint him down at Swayamvar. It seemed to Karna, that he got a chance to fight Arjuna affront, but couldn’t even stand before him. After gaining sense, Karna tried to attack Arjuna in Brahmana disguise, but his bow string was torn apart then and there by Arjuna. Karna, this time retired and thought in mind – is Arjuna really invincible? If he is not, then why couldn’t he even stand before him!

On the other side of swayamvar, Duryodhana and Dushasana along with Bhagadatta and Salva made attack on Bhima. They threw their heavy maces on Bhima, but Bhima looked at those maces as if kusha grass was thrown over him. Finally, he lifts up a pillar from the amphitheatre and throws to the princes hurting them vigorously. Finding that these two brahmanas are invincible and thinking that Kshatriya can never win a battle against Brahmana, when the later fixes his mind to destroy them, Duryodhana, Karna and all the princes departed then and there from the hall. Taking the permission of King and Krishna, Arjuna took Draupadi and departed from the swayamvar.

All Kshatriyas failed to win Swayamvar

Finally the auspicious day of Swayamvar arrived and Kshatriyas of different regions reached Panchal. Everyone was desirous to have a look at the Yagnaseni, the wonderful maid born out of Yagna fire.
