Different tales of Mahabharata Book suggests that Pandavas were much more stronger and capable in war, as compared to Kauravas and all other warriors of Bharata. They were much more powerful and along with that Brahmacharya of 12 years (suggested by Vidura) will make them even more powerful. But Karna and Duryodhana were also powerful. Still why they became afraid? What were the vows, which made them so much afraid?

The first vow was from Bheema. According to the Mahabharata Book, Bhima took the vow to kill Dushasana. The vow was not only to kill him, but also to stretch open his chest at the middle of battlefield and drink his blood from the chest. Later Draupadi took the vow not to bind her hair lock, unless Bhima won’t sweat those locks with blood from Dushasana’s chest.

Bhima’s next vow was to break the thigh of Duryodhana, which he showed with a filthy indication to Draupadi. Many thought that this was not possible, since according to rules of mace fighting, mace cannot be charged in the body portion below chest. However, Duryodhana was later cursed by Durvasa and other rishis that his thigh (uru) will be broken in battle by Bhima. This was when Duryodhana, showing his hips, mocked at the sages during Vana Parva of Mahabharata Book.

Bhima’s next vow was to remove Dhritarashtra’s bloodline completely from earth. This was a terrible vow and that shocked the entire Kuru Dynasty and when the same was performed by Bhima, the earth was shocked by the terrible act of his according to Mahabharata Book. Later, Nakula also took vows that he would kill any sons of Dhritarashtra, who would be left aside by Bhima. Sahadeva, who was also ignited by Bhima, took the vow to slay the king of Gandhar, Shakuni with his complete dynasty in the battle.

Arjuna, who always remained patient and silent with speeches and actions, remained silent too. But Bhima tried to invoke that sleeping lion, who when added with Keshav, had the capability to demolish even the celestials with complete force of Devas, Yakshas and Gandharvas. He forced him to take the vow to kill Karna. In response, Arjuna said some words with deep resolution at the sabha that shocked and feared all. He said, he would definitely slay the vain and filthy Karna with wicked oral speeches and extreme arrogance and he would also slay every king that would approach him in the war. He cautioned all, according to Mahabharata book, that he would do massacre after fourteenth year from that day, if the Kurus won’t return their kingdom.

All these made the king Dhritarashtra, the wrathful Duryodhana and the entire side of Kurus extremely afraid. They were quite aware of Pandavas, who never uttered any false word and never uttered a word, that would go in vein, without fulfilment. That made them afraid. Moreover, Karna and Duryodhana were very much aware about their strength in battle. That is why they tried to snatch kingdom and prosperity from Pandavas through covert during Dice game of Sabha Parva.

Karna faced Arjuna earlier during Swayamvar Sabha of Draupadi and understood the strength of Arjuna. He also faced Bhima during Rajasuaya Yagna Digvijay as per the directions of Mahabharata Book and understood his strength. That is why, after the Pandavas took great vows at the start of their exile and when Bhishma and Vidura counselled them to practice Brahmacharya, Kauravas and Karna became alarmed.

As a result, they soon made Vaishnava Yagna, according to Mahabharata Book to strengthen their side and at least put more Maharathis and Adirathas and Atirathas before them, in the coming up confrontation. All these, including desperate try from Kauravas and Karna to demolish Pandavas at Dwaitwa Van and try to reveal their disguise at Virata Kingdom, all shows how much afraid they became with the vows of Pandavas.
