In Sambhava Parva, Gandhari was the first to conceive, but Kauravas birth comes late in Mahabharat episode. Kunti conceives and Yudhisthira is born to Pandu. He met with the maid of Gandhari, a vaisya woman and made her conceive the first of the Kauravas, Yuyutsu. Gandhari felt immense mental pain for that incident and she bit her womb vigorously. With that bit, she gave birth to a terrible looking lump of flesh, after 18 months of pregnancy. The lump of flesh she found even shocked her more. When she was completely shattered about kauravas birth, Vyasa, the great sage came to her.

As Gandhari gives birth to a lump of flesh, she becomes very much shocked, but that was not the end. In fact, that was the start to another Mahabharat episode. Vyasa came to the spot in Sambhava parva and applies high quality science to shape that lump of flesh to 100 Kauravas. Gandhari was having a wish to give birth to a baby daughter too. Knowing the wish of Gandhari, Vyasa cuts off the flesh into 101 pieces and keeps them in dark place, soaking each flesh pieces into a pure earthen pot filled with clarified butter. Yuyutsu, although was being conceived before this event, but his birth was just after Duryodhana and hence Duryodhana was the eldest of kauravas.
The science that was applied by Vyasa in this process is similar to that of Test Tube Baby concept of today, but the concept is much more simpler and even more vast. According to Mahabharat, under the authorship of Ugrasav Sauti, boon to Gandhari to beget 100 Kauravas was allotted by Vyasa and not by Shiva. Considering that Mahabharat as standard, Gandhari smashed her womb being envied with the fact that – Kunti gave birth to Yudhisthira. Vyasa reached there and arranged the embryos in earthen pot for complete 2 years. Moreover, all the three editions of Mahabharat episode, namely, Jaya, Bharat and Mahabharat narrates that Duryodhana was of same age to Bhima. Hence, considering the book of Ugrasav Sauti as standard, Bhima was 2 years younger than Yudhisthira.

In Sambhava parva, at the time of Duryodhana birth, jackals and every nocturnal animals and birds suddenly started crying. Their agony was such that it clearly indicated the birth of a destroying agent. Listening to that, Vidura, Bhishma and even Vyasa asked Dhritarashtra and Gandhari to abolish that baby. They also made them remember that they have other 100 babies too, who are yet to take birth. So, for the sake of Kauravas dynasty and for the sake of world, they must abolish him. Alas! Dhritarashtra never in any Mahabharat episode could place himself as a king more than a father! Thus Duryodhana was never abolished and even his father and mother could not find any fault of their son in future, even after he committed venomous crimes.

Other brothers of Duryodhona followed him soon in Sambhava parva. The next son of Gandhari after Duryodhana was Dussasana and he was of same age to Arjuna, the middle Pandavas. Rest all brothers were younger than Nakula and Sahadeva, the sons of Madri. However, the rest 98 brothers were born within a span of 2 years. Before the 98 kauravas, the only daughter of Gandhari was born in Sambhava parva and she was elder than Nakula and Sahadeva. Her name was Dussala and she was later married to the king of Sindh, Jayadratha.
