In our last three sessions, we talked about three types of yoga. But to be very actual, those three types of yoga are not discreet and practically, when all those three are practiced together, then only one reaches close to salvation. To be more accurate, the three types of Yoga, Gyan, Karma and Bhakti are not even three types – the integrated Yoga is dissected just into three forms. Hence, one who practices all the three forms is a perfect yogi. But, how to practice all the three forms together? And before this question comes – Why to practice these three forms together? Today, in our exclusive lesson, we will cover these two questions with in-depth details.

Before going in details of the topic, just follow these four lines of a famous song in Bengali language, which Swami Vivekananda loved very much and even his guru.

Satyapathe Mon Koro Ahoran;
Premer Alo Jwali Rakho Anukhhon;
Sangete Rekho Joto Punyodhon;
Gopone Ati Jotone;

Meaning of these lines:

Let the mind walk in the path of truth;
Let the light of Love illuminate your mind every time;
Keep virtue with you in your path;
Keep all these three preserved well maintaining secrecy;

This are the lines of a song, called “Mono Chalo Nije Niketane” meaning “Let the mind reach its own abode”. The song was delightfully sung by Swami Vivekananda before his master, Lord Ramakrishna and the later loved to listen the song, especially in the voice of Swami.

The song paragraph states three things to be carried by a Yogi, while he/she starts his journey towards Salvation. These three are: Truth, Love and Virtue. I feel, you have understood that very well. Now, an analysis is essential and while you do that analysis, types of yoga are sure to come up. Among the types of yoga, Truth is sourced by Gyan Yoga; Love is sourced by Bhakti Yoga; and Virtue is sourced by Karma Yoga. So, the song paragraph states that all the three types of Yoga must be kept in the bag of a yogi, as he starts his journey and he/she must keep all those in great secret. This is all about a quote. Now, in-depth and practical analysis is essential for understanding the same, as understanding is essential before adopting anything.

Coming directly to the point, let’s start off with Gyan Yoga. Gyan Yoga, with stories, morale and logic establishes the truth in mind. To be accurate, truth is already established in the mind of every creation in the universe and hence there is no need to establish that, but to re-establish the same. Gyan Yoga does that only. But, it’s time for you to think, whether the function of this primary types of yoga, can provide you salvation. The answer is no.

Books, logics and statement can make you understand that the entire creation itself if God, but it cannot make you feel the same. And unless, you feel the same, you are away from everything. Just like a morale of a story gives lesson, but to make it establish in your mind, it needs a story, similarly, you need a live example to feel that the sentences of Gyan Yoga are real. The sentences of Guan Yoga states that – it is for material attachments that one feels sorrow. So, it is quite evident that if the material attachments can be kept outside of your mind, sorrow will not touch you. But, how to realize that the statement is accurate? The only way is practice.

Practice of what? Practice of the second among types of Yoga – The Karma Yoga. Karma Yoga teaches to work, without thinking of the end results and when end results are not thought off, attachment to the object naturally declines. Karma Yoga trains, do work for the social benefit, without thinking what you are getting from it as fruit. When you do those, you will understand that sorrow is what has been indicated by Gyan Yoga. It will not touch you, although there will be sufficient reason of sorrow. For example:

You have helped someone clear their exams with proper guidance. The boy or girl have scored high and became exceedingly happy with the results. You did all the things just with a motive to help him or her, and in return, you sought nothing. The boy or girl, with the pleasure in mid, forgets your help and role in the good results and removes all contacts with you in the coming future. If you are not a Karma Yogi, you will feel immensely sorrow for the deed, and you might even think that the world is ungrateful. But, while you act like a Karma yogi, you will not even care about the gratefulness of the kid to you. So, which one will bring sorrow? The earlier one or the later one? Of course, the earlier one.

Now, you have done virtuous work by helping others and kept virtue in you as secret gems. You understood that Karma Yoga is going to release you from sorrow, but keeping away from all attachments is becoming tougher and tougher. Hence, a need and urgency is felt at heart, about a deep attachment – Such an attachment, which will not allow you to be attached with anything else. There is the need of the third among the types of Yoga – The Bhakti Yoga.

What else than the truth itself can be the best choice of attachment? Bhakti Yoga will lead you to the attachment towards that truth itself. That Truth can be without shape (Nirvana as indicated by Vedanta) or can be with shape (Krishna, Kali, Shiva or anything, all are the different characters of the same truth). More you will be attached with the truth, pure will be your love and devotion and lesser will be the material attachments.

So, Knowledge of truth from Gyan Yoga gives rise to the urgency of leaving all material attachments, which is successfully handled by Karma Yoga. On the other hand, leaving all material attachments need a better and more powerful attachment and that is awarded by Bhakti Yoga. Thus, all the three types of Yoga are combined and they all are practiced by you, in order to reach that highest form of Yogi. There is the need of all the three types of Yoga and only when you add all those three, Truth, Love and Virtue are added with you, which you need essentially to be a Yogi. Now, comes how to practice all the three concurrently. Even the professional and the best yogis fail to suggest this to a person. So, it is really a tough answer. I will try to answer this to you, but I will also suggest you to consult with a real time Yogi (Not a Yoga Posture trainer at all) before practicing the same.

The best way to practice all the three types of yoga in your daily life is to divide the entire day in three halves (not equal half). Keep one half of the day for practicing Gyan Yoga. During this time of the day, read scripts (try to read originals, without interpolations) and talk with yourself, or like me narrate your words in some websites or blogs. All I am doing now, while writing this blog article, is talking with myself and even guiding myself. Human mind and human intellect are the best friends, if they can be met with each other.

Try to do that with mediation. As you sit for meditation with the intention to catch hold of mind, you will find that the speed of mind is so huge that intellect cannot get a proper sight to it even. Enrich intellect with Gyan Yoga logics, scripts and morale. Let the intellect utter the same to mind every time in meditation, mind will slow down its pace and listen to it. As it slows down, you will see a light almost fixed at a place, as you close your eyes, vibrating with enormous speed.

Try to force your intellect say negative things to that light. Ignite the knowledge hub, that resides in the light with negative talks. A point will come, when the naturally enriched soul, unable to withstand the negative words, will start narrating the truth. Once that starts, you will soon find that your heart is an enormous hub of knowledge and it had kept with it all experiences of your past life.

Now narrate the live stories, intellect finds in daily life to the mind. You will soon realize that mind interprets the same with high level of universal knowledge and establishes Paramatma as the supreme being in your intellect.

Ignite Karma Yoga Now

Initially devote much time to this phenomenon, but when mind starts chatting, it will remain in background, ever-running. Hence, devoting much time will not be essential then. As the mind speaks those truthful facts and relate the life stories with truth, the second of the types of Yoga is to be ignited. Karma Yoga is to be followed throughout the day, where mind will continuously gossip at your ears, loosen the attachments. Do what time directs you to do. See the nature, the Prakriti. Work like her. More you follow the words, better a Karma Yogi, you will become.

Ignite Bhakti Yoga Now

At the end of the day, you will feel bogged down with the pressure of attachments, which you have not allowed to envelope yourself. So, it’s time to pass on those to some bigger hub, much bigger than mind itself. Rely on your mind, the streamer of love. It will show you the path to transfer those attachments to Lord, the Paramatma, the lord of all lords, the Soul. An urge will come in you, as a whole including, body-mind-intellect, to sense that soul. That soul which gallops all your attachments, that soul which has swallowed all your sorrows, that soul which has been described by Gyan Yoga.

Mind will train you here again. It will show you that this soul is the real friend, the real father, the real mother, the real Guru and the real self. It will narrate you that this soul cared you every time, in your every life. When you intentionally forgot this soul, then also it cared you. When you hated the almighty for this hell like world, then also it cared you. When you felt alone, this soul didn’t let you alone. When you plunged yourself in materials, bodily loves and loves of senses and never asked welfare of her, then also this hiranyanavi loved you, cared you and she always loves everyone without thinking of gender, time, place, state, caste, creed, knowledge and nothing.

You will feel then the real attachment – The attachment towards pure love; attachment towards that love which doesn’t demand anything in return. That ignites your third and the final among types of Yoga  – The Bhakti Yoga. And once ignited, it will carry you within it through a huge journey, which at time will make you feel never ending. It will stop then when you surrender completely to that soul and then it will show you that there is no difference between you and her – No difference at all. You will feel then the urge to unite with her and that state is Moksh.

Tips to find out a real Yogi

This is all for today friends. I again consult you to accept all these when your heart accepts it and please consult with a real time yogi. You can find them in Samsans (graveyards), Himalayas and some of the old temples in distant rural areas. Do not search them in poplar areas. I am not saying that they do not reside there, but those places are so much filled with fakes, that as a beginner, it will be really tough to choose the right among them.

And I must say another thing or you may say tips, while you starts your journey with types of Yoga. A real Yogi is fond of love. You give him or her nothing, except pure love. He or she will be so happy on you that you cannot imagine. This tips might help you in searching a real time yogi. In the next lesson, I will narrate you, what Bhakti Yoga absolutely is. It will be a thrilling experience, where you will need no knowledge but an imagination skill. So, stay prepared for that.
